James Town Retains Uriel Azel Unity Cup on Penalties

The final of the 2025 Uriel Azel Unity Cup, organised for the Ikot Use Ekong group of villages, was held on Sunday, 4 January 2026, at the Salvation Army Primary School, Ikot Use Ekong, drawing a large turnout of football enthusiasts and community members.

In a repeat of last year’s final, Udua Okposin and James Town once again emerged as finalists. Just like the previous edition, the encounter ended goalless after regulation time, with both teams displaying discipline, resilience, and tactical organisation throughout the 90 minutes.

The match was eventually decided via a penalty shootout, where James Town edged Udua Okposin 7–6 to retain the Unity Cup title, having also defeated the same opponents on penalties in the 2024 final.

The organisers of the tournament, Mr and Mrs Michael Edoho, splashed millions of naira during the event, underscoring their commitment to grassroots sports development and community unity. Mr Michael Edoho emphasised that the competition, now in its fourth edition, was purely a community-driven initiative with no political undertone.

Speaking at the event, Mrs Williet Michael explained that the motivation behind the tournament was their genuine love for their people. She noted that seeing members of the community come together in joy and harmony was their greatest reward.

She promised to pay WAEC fees for 10 indigent children and also add up getting Jamb forms for some students intending to further their education.

She expressed appreciation to all teams, officials, supporters, and guests who came out to support the event and assured the community that plans were already underway to make the next edition even bigger and better.

The Uriel Azel Unity Cup has continued to serve as a platform for promoting unity, talent discovery, and peaceful coexistence among the Ikot Use Ekong villages.
